When God was an Englishman one of his favoured sons built a great house in a field, surrounded it with all the requisites for a country estate which is now tumbled into Greaves Park with fragments which include this stone – which has no history, is merely pendulous matter, upright, facing west, holding the light longer than the trees but simplified in twilight – losing mass, dimension, distilled to triangle – a summary of stone flat-face to the quarter-moon.
